An essential part of your travel pharmacy!
No matter how wonderful the trip, it’s never fun when it turns into a nightmare. Consider yourself lucky if you haven’t experienced traveler’s diarrhea. Once you encounter it for the first time, you’ll recognize it from the moment your stomach starts cramping until you rush to the nearest bathroom.
Traveler’s diarrhea remains the most common health issue for travelers, affecting up to 20-50% of people. It is characterized by the sudden onset of watery or semi-formed stools accompanied by abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and an urgent need to use the bathroom. It’s important to note that not all diarrhea symptoms will appear simultaneously.
Why does traveler’s diarrhea occur?

What are the causes of traveler’s diarrhea?

When does traveler’s diarrhea most commonly occur?
It usually occurs during the first few days of travel, but it can also appear at any time during the trip, and even up to a month after returning.

What if I get diarrhea while traveling?
In the case of traveler’s diarrhea, rehydration is a very important measure, meaning the replacement of lost fluids. This can be done either parenterally or orally, depending on the degree of dehydration. Diarrhea causes fluid loss, which needs to be replenished to avoid the risk of dehydration. It is recommended to replace lost fluids by consuming instant soups from packets, which contain a lot of salt, electrolyte solutions, or tea. Alcohol should be avoided as it can worsen dehydration.
It is also advised to take probiotic-based preparations, which can be taken preventively. The mechanisms of action are strain-specific: there is evidence of the effectiveness of certain lactobacillus strains, as well as Saccharomyces boulardii, making the best choice a preparation that contains these probiotic cultures.
How can we protect ourselves?
To avoid traveler’s diarrhea, you should pay attention to the following during your trip:
- Pay special attention to everything you eat, as food is the main source of infection.
- Do not eat food that has been left at room temperature.
- Do not eat fruits and vegetables if they haven’t been thoroughly washed.
- Avoid dairy products, shellfish, fillings, and various sauces.
- Drink only bottled water and juices while on vacation; hot tea and coffee are also safe.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and clean water, both for yourself and your children, especially before meals.
- Start with GOOD bacteria in time.
For the purpose of disease prevention and avoiding diarrhea while traveling, it is recommended to take GOOD bacteria 5 days before departure, as well as throughout the entire trip.
